MHPSS Specialist (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support)

Your Challenge

Responsible for the MHPSS technical area of our programmes, including standard setting, quality assurance, operationalization and monitoring of our care system portfolio you will ensure and support the roll-out of evidence-based methodologies, capability strengthening and learning, and contribute to sector knowledge & inter-agency networking.

You will coordinate a technical team within the organisation, promoting collaboration and learning in furthering the quality of War Child Holland’s programming. In collaboration with regionally based technical colleagues, you will provide technical support to the organisation, including Country Offices, global programmes and WCH affiliates.

You will work in close collaboration with programme colleagues and management based in the Netherlands, Regional Hubs and Country Offices as well as other departments in the organization including Research & Development team to support the roll out of evidence-based methodologies relevant to your technical area.

Your Responsibilities

Design, Operationalization and Monitoring of Programme Quality Standards

  • Coordinate operationalization of MHPSS in our programme strategy and our care system portfolio, in line with sector standards and Core Humanitarian Standard.
  • Support programme implementation, information sharing and ensure WCH methods & standards remain up to date.
  • Support countries / home office and regional colleagues to apply and adhere to programme strategy and programme quality framework.
  • Ensure effective communication of global programmatic results.

Technical Quality Assurance

  • Lead on implementation of MHPSS thematic strategy and the care system portfolio in close collaboration with R&D and Regional / Country Office thematic experts and PQ technical specialists.
  • Advise, monitor and follow up on the quality of implementation of our evidence based (MHPSS) methods.
  • Facilitate strengthening of Care System Portfolio methods/interventions and support integrated programming initiatives.
  • Provide effective technical expertise to regional and country office colleagues, and to humanitarian response initiatives.
  • Contribute to the programme and thematic strategy, annual plan, proposals, reports and evaluations in relation to MHPSS.

Learning/ Strengthening Capabilities

  • In collaboration with MHPSS colleagues and learning manager coordinate/facilitate/conduct and develop learning in MHPSS to strengthen the capabilities of WCH staff and/or its partners.
  • Lead scalable approach (e.g.: blended/ e-learning) to strengthening of capabilities of trainers/facilitators who are implementing our MHPSS evidence-based methods.
  • Promote WCH as a learning organisation and ensure priority MHPSS learning needs are mapped.

Representation of War Child Holland and Horizontal Collaboration

  • Represent War Child Holland and participate in global / inter-agency networks and bodies that are relevant to the achievement of War Child Holland’s mission and contribute to the implementation of their work plans.
  • Lead MHPSS colleagues through the strategic direction of MHPSS in an organisational change process.
  • Facilitate internal technical global MHPSS Team in implementing common plans, mutual learning and strengthening of programme quality in MHPSS.
  • Collaborate in War Child Global initiatives, coordinate the harmonisation of MHPSS in our shared care system portfolio, in close alignment with programme quality approaches in War Child UK.
  • Collaborate and actively contribute to internal Advocacy working group in support of implementation of Global Advocacy Strategy.

Your Profile

  • Relevant academic background.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in area of expertise, of which at least 3 years in the field.
  • Experience of working in a (post) conflict setting.
  • Knowledge of geopolitical trends and global conflicts.
  • Good working knowledge of MHPSS for education, child protection and adolescents & youth would be an asset.
  • Strong advisory skills along with an understanding of (learning/capacity strengthening) needs.
  • Experience in developing methods, tools, programs/interventions, learning development and delivering training.
  • Effective facilitation skills & intercultural sensitivity.
  • Solid communicator, willing to share knowledge and experience.
  • Strategic thinking mindset plus strong project management experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in Monitoring & Evaluation.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of children’s rights.
  • Fluency in English required and preferably good working knowledge of Spanish, French or Arabic.


Any country where War Child has its offices. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in that country. Preference will be given to local candidates.

Travelling to country offices of War Child Holland, its affiliates and elsewhere is required to fulfil the obligations of this role.

Depending on the duty station, local contract with salary and secondary labour conditions based on the country’s salary scale and T&C's will apply.
